The World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) is a governing body for the sport of taekwondo. It is also a member of the Summer Olympic International Federations. By breaking down the word Taekwondo, we can begin to understand what this martial art involves. ‘Tae’ (foot) ‘Kwon’ (fist or fight) and ‘do’ (the way of).

This is more than just a sport as it was created from ancient practices and traditions that are designed to increase the training of mind, body and spirituality. When practiced fully, Taekwondo becomes more than a physical skill in that it gives its practitioners the key to gaining the correct attitude and values in order to face the daily challenges of life.

More information about style:

Whilst there are some similarities with other traditional Asian martial arts, it differs in its dynamic style with high precision kicking techniques. WTF Taekwondo is distinguished from ITF mainly due to its unique patterns/forms and sparring competition rules.

The WTF states that Taekwondo is one of the most scientific and systematic Korean traditional arts and represents more than a physical skill. It is currently a recognised Olympic sport.
